Four steps to drinking differently

Our mission at Maharaja Drinks is to encourage you to drink differently. But it might be tricky to grasp what that actually means in practice.

Fikar not. On your journey to becoming a more intrepid drinker (particularly when it comes to Indian drinks), allow us to be your guide. Here we’ve collated some guidelines to help you build a tailored collection of made-in-India drinks to pour at home.

Bear these points in mind as you explore our drinks emporium. And soon, you’ll have a home bar that’s stocked to rival the finest establishments in town.

Tip 1:

Venture beyond the bottle

Each drink we add to our emporium is chosen after much thought. We look at flavour, process, provenance, the origin story and the people factor.

So start by diving into the brands and stories we’ve carefully curated, to build a picture of what goes into each - beyond just what’s in the bottle. Maybe the people behind our Indian teas will draw you in and tempt you to try a new brew. Or perhaps our Indian gins with locally-grown botanicals will pique your interest.

Rest assured that we’ve done the legwork to taste each of our picks (and more than once for some), to ensure they’re deserving of a spot on your shelves at home. And even end up taking pride of place on them.

Tip 2:

Get up close and personal with your palate

We strongly encourage you to be thoughtful about your drink choices – just as we are about our selection.

We’ve all heard the many rules on how to drink. We’re told to opt for unapologetically bold red wines with steak and light white wines with delicate fish. To sip on black teas for a gentle nudge into the day and their green counterpart for an afternoon boost. But really, the fun is in indulging your inner rebel and breaking these rules to find out what works for you. Trust your palate – it’s a lot more fun experimenting anyway.

Tapping into your senses is the best way to begin here: how do you like the aromas, the way it feels when you sip, and of course, the taste itself?

While sweet and sour are easy to identify, the finer details might be trickier to discern at first. But with time, and patience, you’ll soon be picking out the specifics. Until then (if you’re keen to dig further) our resident drinks gurus will soon be putting together a guide to developing your drinks palate which will help differentiate the details.

We’ve built a trove of information for each of our drinks, to paint a full picture so that even those starting out in this world can find their feet. And whether you’re a seasoned drinks enthusiast or not, you can always contact us to pick the brains of our resident cocktails, wines and spirits gurus and find the best profiles for your palate.

Tip 3:

Shake things up (and we don’t just mean cocktails)

Once you’ve got a good understanding of your likes and dislikes, it’s time to push the boat out. Call yourself a ‘red wine person’? Perhaps a wine made from tropical fruits grown in India will have you changing that label.

Convinced that cola is the only thing to mix with whisky? Let us show you the Indian whiskies that could change your mind. Perhaps soon you’ll be sipping on them neat, or stirring up cocktails you’ve never tried before.

Or maybe you’re someone who settled on a preferred morning coffee long ago, and you’ve not thought to go beyond the familiar. Well, our personally-picked selection of Indian coffees could take your morning routine from ‘blah’ to ‘wah-wah’.

Tip 4:

Savour, don’t swig – you can thank us later

Overindulgence is nobody’s friend, and we’re keen to keep things friendly here. The art of savouring requires patience, which (while admittedly challenging for some) comes with its rewards. By sipping and savouring, you’ll be able to luxuriate in the depth of flavours, ranging from zesty to oaky, robust to refreshing and everything in between. Addle the senses too much, and your palate will be befuddled.

Need a little more guidance on how to keep things in check? Venture over here for more information.

And there you have our 4 simple tips to help you drink the Maharaja way. From developing a well-rounded understanding of what you’re choosing, to curating a drinks collection at home that reflects your personal taste, we’re here to help you feel confident that whatever you pour for guests at your next shindig will surprise and delight.
